The Ventura College Miriam and Henry Schwab Academy of Music provides instrumentalists with intensive instruction and meaningful performance opportunities designed to strengthen their musical knowledge, technique, and artistry. Participants engage in daily rehearsals and perform alongside some of Southern California’s most exciting professional musicians.
Chamber Music
Students enrolled in the Chamber Music course rehearse daily from 1:00–4:00 p.m. Each day includes small ensemble rehearsals and a final hour dedicated to workshops on topics such as music appreciation, instrument care, conducting, career paths in music, performing with technology, and more. These sessions allow students to expand their musical skills, explore new ideas, and connect with our outstanding faculty. Chamber Music students perform one to three concerts during the Academy.
Orchestra Music
Students in the Orchestra course rehearse daily from 5:30–8:30 p.m. Rehearsals include sectionals focused on instrument-specific techniques and full orchestra sessions under the direction of Schwab Academy Director, Dr. Ashley Walters. The Academy Orchestra also serves as the ensemble for the final round of the Schwab Violin and Viola Competition, performing eight concertos with some of the county’s finest young musicians. In the final two weeks, the orchestra prepares a concert featuring iconic works from the orchestral canon—past performances have included Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.
Experience the Schwab Academy for just $70 per course — college credit included! Dual enrollment students (under 18) will need approval from multiple parties, so be sure to start the paperwork early to secure your spot.

The annual Allegro Solo Competition is open to all instrumentalists and vocalists performing music of any genre. Up to two winners will perform their selected piece with the Ventura College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Ashley Walters. The third annual Allegro Solo Competition will take place on March 21, 2026 at the Ventura College Performing Arts Center.
The Henry Schwab Violin and Viola Competition is an annual competition for violinists and violists residing in Ventura or Santa Barbara counties. The finals of the competition take place live on stage each July with the soloists accompanied by the Ventura College Symphony under the direction of Ashley Walters. This competition, now in its 16th year, has been a cornerstone of the instrumental music program at Ventura College thanks to the generous donation of Miriam Schwab who wanted to honor her late husband Henry Schwab.
